One of the many pleasures
of flower gardens is making the most of
the decorative value of the garden's
products.
Bouquets and arrangements of
colorful flowers are always ready if the
garden is carefully planned to provide a
succession of blooms from spring until
frost. Cut flowers should be used
freely in all parts of the home.
Flowers are appropriate in the living
room where touches of color are needed
to brighten a corner or perhaps add
interest to the mantle, end table,
pedestal or other pieces of furniture.
One should always provide
flowers for the dining table, a few in
the guest room, a bowl or basket of
flower blossoms in the hall, and a vase
on the library table. Some unusual
places that should not be overlooked are
the humble breakfast nook or the sun
room. Even the summer porch or veranda
can be made more cheerful with carefully
arranged wall pockets or hanging vases.
It is indeed difficult to find a place
where flowers cannot be used to good
advantage, and as they often last much
longer in the house than in the garden-
it is good economy to have them serve as
a double purpose.
Suitable Flowers for
Home Arrangement
One never tires of a
garden because the scenes are constantly
changing. This is one of the principal
reasons why flower arranging is so
interesting and intriguing. Spring
ushers in the advance guard of early
flowering bulbs and hardy shrubs.
Tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and
bluebells vie with forsythia,
honeysuckle, lilacs and the many kinds
of fruit blossoms. All of this plant
material is lovely in flower bouquet
work and fills a big need until
roses,
summer annuals, and perennials are
available.
In the Autumn and
winter, when flowers are scarce, one can
resort to the use of decorative berries,
seed pods and fruit cut from cultivated
shrubs and vines. A list of plants
would include
Japanese barberry, snowberry,
privet, bittersweet, clematis and many
species of
roses.
Strawflowers or everlastings as a matter
of course are the old standbys in winter
home decorations. The bulk of bouquet
material in the average home is gleaned
from the summer flower garden.
